Here is a tutorial that I first published on the net. Having been bitten by the folder bug, and inspired by Mr Fisk's "Old thorny" folder, I thought I would have a go at making something similar.

First off the steel. Not a complicated pattern but I did have to scratch my head once or twice before I started, and this is how I did it:

First start with 13 layers of steel, 20c and 15n20. I doubled up on the 15n20 to achieve an even thickness for the layers.

This was then welded up and drawn out into one bar 15mm (or) 1/2" square, cut into eight pieces and restacked.

The stack was "tack" welded in readiness for welding where the billet was welded and prepared for drawing out (NOTE: be sure to keep dimensions similar to avoid making the "squares" of the weave dissimilar)

Billet welded up and slightly drawn out

Billet drawn out to 14" and cut up into 7 pieces ready for a restack.

All the "squares" are stacked up and ready for welding now.

Welded up the "squares" and next, cut off a handle to weld to end so the billet for later working and attaching to handle. The handle, to be used for woking the billet can be trued up and then made neat and tidy.

Once trued up and given a quick grind and etch to see if we have "messed up"

Now I just have to take a slice off and see if I can make it into something sharp!
